Welp, this has been... a week. This costume will be the death of my fingersJust... keep... sewing! Katara's really starting to come together, but there are quite a few hours more of detail work before she's wearable! First and foremost: the white lace design on the bodice. The first thing I had to do was figure out the placement of the lace. I purchased some lace from an Etsy seller: two large, sequined appliqués and one yard of a scrollwork lace fabric. Upon arrival, I discovered that one of the lace appliqués was missing its sequins on one side. I contacted the seller and they agreed to send me a new piece. Unfortunately, it won’t be here in time for the premiere of this costume, so I’ll just have to re-sew that section. Ah well. That decided, I took a deep breath and snipped into my expensive lace, starting to arrange it on the dress in a pattern reminiscent of Hannah’s design. I went through several different stages of arranging the lace. This part was hugely trial and error until I was able to really nail down the look I wanted. There are still a few minor tweaks I would like to make, but for the most part, the design is good to go! My interpretation isn’t perfect (and it was never going to be unless I commissioned custom lace), but it’s fairly close and looks just... so pretty. I'm absolutely in love with how the lace looks on the fabric, and how the fabric moves exactly like water, and how the lace has this subtle shimmer that just... brings my heart so much joy.
I've spent about 15 hours hand sewing so far, and it's ever so slowly starting to come together <3 Looking forward to trying her on soon!
I take my foot....So at MAGFest, there's going to be a wizard party. And not just any wizard party -- a wizard party that's going to try to break the world record of number of wizards gathered in one place at a specific time! The event began almost as a joke, but now it's blown up with over 446 RSVP'd attendees (and almost 1,000 "interested" users) on the Facebook event, an official band, and a bunch of Mardis Gras beads. Obviously, I have to make a costume for this. Because MAGFest is generally a less serious environment, I wanted to do something a little over the top. What wizards have I wanted to cosplay in the past... that don't take themselves too seriously.... that would be quick to whip together... OF COURSE. Voldemort. From A Very Potter Musical. (Don't judge me) This is a pretty simple costume, involving a cowl, a cape, black leggings, a skin-tone bra, a long wooden dowel (for the wand), makeup, and, of course... tap shoes. I'll be making the rest of the costume once I get back from my travels home for the holidays, but I don't anticipate the cape + cowl taking more than a few hours (after all, I made something very similar for my Assassin Meg costume). I already own the bra and the leggings, can pick up a wooden dowel for <$5, I already have white face paint (thanks, Kyoshi!) and HEY LOOK, I just got these sweet tap shoes in the mail. So yeah. This is a thing that's happening I guess. :D An Unexpected JourneySURPRISE. I'm FINALLY finishing my Journey costume! It's been what... two years...(?!) since I made this thing in a week for MAGFest 2016. I've worn it a few times since then, but I haven't had a scarf or a proper body suit... UNTIL NOW. Why? Because I'm shooting in one of my absolute DREAM locations next week, Badlands National Park in South Dakota. The amazing location is just over an hours' drive from where I grew up! I spent most of Saturday throwing together this cute lil two-piece bodysuit, patterned *very* roughly from Simplicity 1036. The fabric is a textured red knit from JoMar (basically a fabric thrift store in my area). A few quick passes in the serger and it was done! The end effect is a pretty shapeless bodysuit, which actually works in my favor. The Journey travelers are essentially genderless, so having a bodysuit that smooths out my curves is actually a huge plus.
The last thing to finish up was the scarf! I have honestly been dreading this project for quite a while, and for good reason: appliqué is hard and this particular design has a LOOOT of tiny pieces. But I just set my jaw and did it! Step one: create long rectangle tube out of two layers of fabric and sew together. Next, I used Heat'n'Bond Ultrahold on my some gold and white fabric, tracing a design I created thanks to various Journey internet resources. Bless all the creatives that have tackled this costume and put their resources online. I love every single one of you.
Ginjuries notwithstanding, I still ended up with a pretty cool final product! That's it for this week! Tune in next week to hear all about crafting in South Dakota and many fun photoshoot times. I hope your holidays are going well!
