The first costume I plan to finish for ColossalCon East is Momo Yaoyozoru from My Hero Academia! I love this anime (despite some of its problematic elements) and I very much identify with Momo. For context, she’s a star student but sometimes has trouble with second-guessing herself when she’s on the field. Her “Quirk” (superpower) is being able to create anything she likes from the lipids stored in her body, as long as she knows the chemical composition of the object! Basically, chemistry is her superpower. So let’s take a quick look at her hero costume and how it helps her fight the villains! The Yaoyoreotard
The biggest design challenge will be creating a garment that supports and shapes the bust with such an open center. I’m planning to tackle this with (a) a very well-fitted bodysuit, (b) tulle that matches my skin tone, and (c) a few well-placed clear elastics. I’m going to be using a combination of Ultrapreme from Cosplay Fabrics and a bits and pieces of black and white jumbo spandex I happen to have lying around. I also plan to line the swimsuit in power mesh in a similar way I did to the space faerie, but with a slightly different method because I’m out of painter’s tape. The Yaoyoro-belt
I’m planning to tackle this with a nice cut of utility fabric I found in the remnant bin at JoAnn! I plan to include functional pouches and magnets in the back to hold up her *checks notes* ..."Yaoyorictionary"? Yup. That's it. The Yaoyorictionary
... which I will make into a book safe! Without cutting away some of the bulk, it's entirely too heavy to actually mount to the back of my costume. Plus, it'll make a convenient place to store my phone, keycard, and artist alley swag! The Yaoyorictionary rests on her butt a weird shelf type thing, which I will probably make out of EVA foam & sew/glue to the belt. The book safe will snap on via magnets! Additional AccessoriesThat pretty much covers it for the canon design, but there are a few more finishing touches.
Aight, planning's all done! Let's make a costume!
So things might be a little confusing here on Patreon for a while simply because I'm going to be working on multiple projects at once! This particular project is The Big One. I'll be working on this on and off for the next few months, interspersing it with smaller, fun projects for when I get bored with too much hand sewing or painting. What is this costume, you ask? Why, it's the Water Sprite Barbie! *fanfare* This particular Signature Barbie is from the Faraway Forest collection, a set of mystical fantasy-inspired Barbies that even come with a cute little fantasy story. I highly recommend checking out the rest of the collection, as they're beautifully designed! This project is a huge undertaking! It involves intense wigwork, a new (to me) armor creation technique, my first corset & undergarments, and sequin fabrics that I've never worked with before! It's been a while since I truly pushed myself out of my comfort zone, and I'm ready to hop back into the fray.
I did a little something different this time! Instead of a full-on blog post, here's a quick video about how the shoot went down! Basically, it was me, myself, and I in my basement (with a lil help from my roommate Cassie to get my wings on!) This is going to be one video in a three-part series looking into how I made my Space Faerie costume. The other two will be a (1) tutorial about my wings, and (2) a look back at the costume, reflecting on what I did right and what I could do better! This is a totally new experience for me, so fingers crossed that it will go well! |
