Well, you know me. My favorite colors are black and gold and I love chiffon, so when Sharon Rose Cosplay asked me to be in her DC Gods & Goddesses group, I couldn't turn down the chance to make this beautiful Aphrodite-inspired Black Canary design!
This is the third design of Hannah Alexander's that I've made, and it's by far the most intensive. I custom-made a bunny suit from scratch, hand-sewed hundreds of pleats, and Frankenstein-ed several lace appliqués to bring the costume to life!
Construction Notes
  • Clothing
The whole costume is built on a black base bunny suit, based on the same pattern I used for my Hannah Alexander Katara. It's three layers of fabric and boned with heavy duty zip ties with a hidden zipper closure. A sparkly blue/black ombré drape is safety-pinned to the suit for easy removal -- you never know when you'll need a basic black bunny suit!

The skirt is pre-dyed ombré chiffon I found in my favorite thrift fabric outlet, hemmed with 3/8" horsehair braid and gathered onto a ribbon.
  • Armor
All armor was made with a combination of 5mm EVA foam, decorated with a combination of 2mm EVA foam and hot glue. All the armor is sealed with plasti-dip and painted with Jacquard Lumiere fabric paints.

The hip plates and shoulders are mounted on ribbons, the breastplate is held in place by lacing, and the bracers close with hidden zippers underneath the wings.

Armor is decorated with black iridescent rooster feathers ranging from 4" to 12".
  • Staff
The staff is two 1.5' sections of 3/4" PVC pipe and two 1/2" wood dowels, and separate spear tips that breaks down into 6 separate pieces for easy travel. The heart base is made of XPS foam, coated in wood glue, with cuttable mirror vinyl forming the mirrors in the center. The wings and spear heads are 5mm EVA foam, detailed with 2mm EVA foam and hot glue.

The spearheads were Plasti-dipped and painted with Jacquard Lumiere paints. The body of the staff was wrapped in stretch pleather.

  • Accessories
The wig is the LF667F from Wig Is Fashion, straight out of the bag.

The leg wraps were picked up in a Spirit Halloween post-holiday sale for $5! Sharon graciously incorporated them into the original design.

The headpiece is a few stray feathers hot glued to a silver headband. Simple yet elegant.

Additional pearl necklaces and decor were added from my personal jewelry stash!
