The Neopets Space Faerie

I like to spend some of my free time playing with the wonders of the stars. It can be quite relaxing.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I played Neopets all the way through high school and college. I have a lot to show for it, too: a couple of unconverted Neopets, a handful of real-named and real-world Neopets, and more Draiks and Krawks than I know what to do with. I definitely don't have a problem.
My favorite thing about this costume is all of the science-y elements I incorporated. The leggings are custom printed with a real image of the Pleiades cluster, and the wings were inspired by the insect glenurus gratus, a nocturnal bug with very weak flying abilities. After all, the space faerie physically can't use her wings in space -- why should she be a strong flier?
Construction Notes
  • Clothing
I wanted the costume to have 80s sci-fi vibes, so I chose a variety of futuristic looking fabrics to create this costume. The bodysuit and gloves are made of a combination of Cosplayfabrics blue Ultrapreme and shiny red Super Stretch vinyl. The puffy... details are mostly given dimension with polyfill, but the hip pads are a soft 6mm EVA foam.

The legs are made from custom-printed Spoonflower fabric featuring an actual image of the Pleiades Cluster, a group of relatively young stars that are all starting to move away from each other at super high speeds! This particular cluster is also known as the "Seven Sisters", or as "Subaru" in Japan. (Yes, the car company's logo and name are both based on this constellation!)

Once again, the stars on my costume are *technically* accurate thanks to my wonderful Patreon supporters, without whom I would have spray painted my best impersonation of a galaxy onto some tights.

  • Armor
The wings were inspired by the adult antlion species glenurus gratus for their slow flying speed, nocturnal nature, and the beautiful patterns on the tips of their wings. The wings themselves are made from thin, clear vinyl fabric, painted with Jacquard Lumiére paints, then fused with a Heat'n'Bond vinyl and topstitched to create the veins. The

  • Wig & Makeup
The wig is a Magnum in Dark Blue from Arda Wigs, basically right out of the bag with a little extra curling and teasing in to make it stand up and be fluffy!

The latex ears were a few dollars at the annual Spirit of Halloween clear-out! I painted them with foundation and Mehron Paradise paints to match my skin tone.

The makeup is all Mehron Paradise Paint in gold to add a bit of shimmer and "otherworldly-ness' to the character appearance. I accentuate the sparkle with various eyeshadows as a highlight and contour, and used a matte eyeshadow to make my eyebrows extra blue!
