Katara is one of my favorite characters of all time. She's an incredibly complex, layered character with a good heart who can still kick your butt when you get out of line.

The Katara episodes in "Book 3: Fire" are among my favorites of the entire series. In particular, the Painted Lady episode shows the deepest parts of Katara's soul: her drive to help people, her stubbornness, and sometimes lack of foresight when it comes to helping others.

Also, spirit magic and etherealness are cool too.
Construction Notes
  • Dress
The dress is made of a purple wool-like fabric I randomly stumbled across on the clearance rack while fabric shopping. I used four yards and used basic draping methods to get the correct shape for the dress. The dress is in two pieces: a skirt with an elastic waistband that opens in the back and sits at my waist, and an over dress that includes the hood, sleeves, and skirt back that is open at the front.

The off-the-shouder shrug is made from a cotton knit that took me about 5 minutes to throw together. I plan to remake it in the future!

The rope is another clearance rack find that I draped around the sleeves and front and hand-sewed to the dress at strategic locations.

  • Hat
The hat is made entirely from wooden kabob skewers, chiffon, and hot glue. I used about three packs of skewers arranged over a three-tiered support structure also made of skewers.

  • Accessories
    - The makeup is water-based Snazaroo (and is almost impossible to apply by myself)
    - The white... thing... is carved pink insulation foam, painted with mod podge and acrylic spray paint.
