Water Sprite Barbie

The Water Sprite’s translucent blue skin sparkles in the sunlight. Long locks of cerulean blue hair cascade down her back. Her flowing gown undulates like gentle waves. She is both alluring and haunting at the same time.

Why did I become a Barbie? Ask my friend Kelley, aka Sunshine Stitchery! She's been a Barbie fan since she was small, and has an impressive array of Collector's Edition Barbies. We convinced our friends to do a whole group based on the Faraway Forest collection. I chose the Water Sprite, because I'm a sucker for sparklies and it looked like a really fun challenge.
This costume has only just begun; I have so many plans for upgrades and am looking forward to crafting the final version!
Construction Notes
  • Dress
The dress is actually two parts: an underskirt that holds the flared skirt, and a knee-length dress that sits over top of it! There are five different fabrics that make up the dress: a matte satin underlayer, two colors of metallic organza (a pink and a blue), and the eye-catching iridescent sequins on the very top! It's also lined with a Disney princess cotton.

I also have two large gathered drapes of fabric that are gathered to rest around my wrists!

Base layers are also important! I wear a black basic corset from Corset Story to get a well-defined shape, as well as a white mermaid petticoat and hoop skirt I bought from Amazon. I have plans to make both underlayers from scratch soon!

  • Armor
The armor is made of 4mm and 6mm foam from TNT Cosplay Supply, and is detailed using a dremel and hot glue, both freehanded and squeezed into silicone cake decorating molds. The pieces were then plasti-dipped and painted with Jacquard metallic paints. The stomach plates and necklace attach with ties in the back, while the bracers and headpiece use neodymium magnets and a combination of spiral and flat corset steels to connect together.

Sunshine Stitchery helped with creating the detail and dimension on the armor!

  • Accessories
I wear armsocks with this costume to cut down on body-painting time! They're created from We Love Colors Sky Blue microfiber tights in L/XL.

The wig is from Wig Is Fashion - and will hopefully be updated soon!
The bodypaint is Mehron Paradise Paint in Light Blue.

I wear three pairs of eyelashes with this costume! A pair of Dewdrop lashes from Sugarpill Cosmetics, a pair of standard beauty lashes, and some blue Spirit Halloween lashes on my lower lash line.
