Jeffrey Thomas Artwork
Premiered
Katsucon 2016
Creation Time
2.5 months
This was made to be part of a Twisted Disney group for Katsucon, based on the artwork of Jeffrey Thomas. The idea is that that instead of the crystal's power leaving Kida, it instead becomes a parasite, feeding off of her life force. In order to keep itself alive, it forces Kida to cannibalism to feed off the life force of others.

Initially I signed on because I liked the idea and design, but my enthusiasm faded as I tried to find ways to really make the costume come to life. I was just about to drop out of the group when inspiration finally struck. I added some clear, edge-lit armor to the design, as well as some blacklight-reactive paint that really made this costume shine (pun intended)!

I ended up with something that I feel really added on to the original design. I learned a ton of new techniques and effects, and I'm so impressed with how well this costume came together.

  • Clothing
The same clothing as my regular Kidagakash, but with hella weathering. I tore up the fabric with dull scissors, tea/coffee-dyed it, and stuck it in the oven until it was crispy. I also tore off and tangled a lot of the beading details.

The arm and leg wraps are spandex with loops that are threaded with strips of weathered chiffon and bottomweight fabric. The top white poofs are made of hand-tied yarn wefts brushed out into matted fur clumps.

The bodysuit is a simple body stocking from Amazon that was painted with both regular white fabric paint and fluorescent (blacklight) paint.

  • Armor
The armor is made of acrylic sheets/Plexiglas that were cut out and detailed/weathered with a hot knife. LED strings were attached to the edge of the armor using black Worbla and painted white, then secured with hot glue.

The armor is attached using crystal organza scraps that also hide the battery packs for the LEDs.
  •  Accessories
    - The arm cuff is made of carved & painted 6mm craft foam.
    - The wig was bought on eBay and cut and styled, with another wig added for volume
    - The necklace crystal was bought on Amazon, but I replaced the chain with a leather cord.
    - The earring is a heavy gold-tone earring bought on Amazon, weathered with black paint.
    - The blacklight is a simple handheld version from Amazon. Surprisingly powerful, though!
    - The white-out contacts are from Honeycolor.
