Apprentice Terra

My name is Terra. I have done horrible things. And I have absolutely no regrets.

Teen Titans is a fantastic show, and it was my introduction to the DC universe, and the characters still resonate with me to this day. Terra's apprentice armor has been on my "dream cosplay" list since I started cosplaying!

I always found Terra's story incredibly compelling. Her struggle to control her powers, her desire for acceptance, her fall from grace, and her ultimate redemption -- it makes for an incredible storyline and a very believable character (apart from the whole "rock powers" thing). Plus, her apprenticeship with Slade touches on some really mature themes.

To this day, I cry whenever I watch the end of Aftershock.
Construction Notes
  • Bodysuit
The suit is made from a combination of Yaya Han's white Ultrapreme fabric and black spacer fabric I found on clearance. I drafted the pattern by sewing a well-fitted bodysuit from Simplicity 1036, marking spirals down the legs, arms, and stomach, and cutting it out to create a new pattern. This pattern was primarily made out of rectangular strips, which were sewn back into a spiral (and it was very fabric-efficient, too!) Unfortunately, Ultrapreme doesn't breathe all too well when it's directly against the skin, so I wear a combination of dance tights and shapewear to cover my body underneath the suit for breathability!

  • Armor
The armor is made from various thicknesses of EVA foam from TNT Cosplay Supply and styrofoam cups for the cylindrical details. I custom-patterned all the armor from scratch, using a thick EVA foam on the bottom and thinner foam for the plating details on top.

The styrofoam cups were sealed with wood glue before the entire armor set was Plasti-dipped (to prevent the spray from eating away the styrofoam). The black parts were covered in black power mesh to add texture; the armor plates were painted with FolkArt metallic acrylics.

The orange LEDs are all diffused by the styrofoam and powered by 11 CR-2032 batteries. The light in the center is diffused with old milk carton plastic and colored using red and yellow theater gels overlaid on top of it. The gels are topped with a foam emblem and finished with a heat-formed acrylic plastic dome!

The armor pieces are attached by a variety of methods, including velcro, friction, and magnets (depending on the piece).

  • Wig
I found this wig on Amazon.com and was pleasantly surprised by its color and quality! I treated it with a silicone spray to make it tangle-resistant since wigs on top of armor tend to tangle very badly. Apart from that, it needed no additional styling (yay!).
