Art Nouveau Megara

If life is worth the disappointment, I hadn't found one reason yet... until I met the boy who smiles for free.

Hannah Alexander Artwork

Katsucon 2016
Creation Time
2.5 months
In about mid-2015, I came across a couple of Hannah Alexander's designs... somewhere. Deviant Art? Buzzfeed? Tumblr? Honestly I don't recall. Regardless, I absolutely fell in love with the Art Nouveau redesigns of Disney princesses, particularly (you guessed it), Megara's.

So what's a poor girl to do, but put a group together for Katsucon and dip-dye and embroider herself into oblivion?

One of the reasons I absolutely love this cosplay is how it compares to the first thing I ever made with a sewing machine; it really highlight how far I've come as a seamstress and costumer, and I'm incredibly proud of the end result!
construction notes
  • Dress
The dress is made from silk chiffon from Dharma Trading Company that was dip-dyed with RIT. It's comprised of two parts: an underskirt  and a toga drape + sleeve. The pattern pieces were all rectangles; the skirt is two layers of gathered fabric, and the toga is draped over the shoulder and gathered at the hip. The sleeve is another rectangle, joined to the toga with a french seam.

  • Detailing
The gold beads are sewn by hand onto a strip of the chiffon that was reinforced with a stiff satin. The purple embroidery is cut from an embroiderd organza and glued/sewn to the gathered fabric.

The skirt bottom is detailed using Jacquard metallic fabric paints, painted onto the wrong side of the chiffon over a smooth surface (I used clear packaging tape). The paint soaks through the chiffon and dries as a solid, metallic-looking layer on the right side of the fabric.

Additional gold accents are added in the form of 'liquid beads', which is a pearlescent puffy paint that looks like beading when dried.

  • Armor
The pauldron and breastplate are made out of black worbla, detailed with silicone molds, puffy paint, rhinestones, and painted with acrylic paint. The edges are finished with a bias strip of the same purple satin used in my canon Meg cosplay. Small chains attached to a strap on the covered side of the breastplate keep the pauldron in place. The belt is a 'vine' made out of worbla with worbla leaves detailed using a leaf mold. The medallion is craft foam coverd Worbla with puff paint detailing.

All armor was sealed with 2-3 coats of Mod Podge.

  • Accessories
    - The wig is a Victoria in Mahogany from Arda.
    - The snake bracelets and leaf accessories were ordered from eBay
